The International Novalis Society and Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Research Center for European Romanticism) award the biannual Novalis Prize for innovative research (dissertations and habilitations) on European Romanticism. The prize carries €2,500 and is open to international applicants.

The award recognizes innovative and pioneering research on European Romanticism that breaks new ground in the arts, sciences, philosophy, religion, or society. It honors works that facilitate new understandings of historical and systemic contexts, or of intermedial interactions. It thereby highlights contributions that exemplify interdisciplinary tendencies in a methodologically reflective way—in the spirit of Novalis—or that discuss methodological and theoretical questions of Romanticism research through selected examples. Conceptually grounded translations of key texts of European Romanticism are also eligible.

This prize aims to recognize outstanding contributions by Early Career Researchers to the critical reception and conceptual definition of the phenomenon of European Romanticism and to make them known to a broader academic public.
