Schlegel Lecture

Every two years, the Jena Centre for Studies in Romanticism organises a Schlegel Lecture, for which it invites scholars who have distinguished themselves through particularly stimulating and prominent contributions to Romanticism studies. The name of the series says it all, as it allows for the recognition of diverse scholarly and artistic contributions linked to the interactions within a group of Jena figures around 1800 (August Wilhelm Schlegel, Caroline Schlegel-Schelling, Dorothea Veit-Schlegel and Friedrich Schlegel).

Care is taken in the selection of researchers to ensure that various relevant disciplines are represented throughout the series of lectures. The Schlegel Lecture aims in particular to give a voice to international scholars of Romanticism in Jena. The lecture itself is planned as an evening event aimed at the university community as well as the wider local and regional public. A workshop is also to be organised in conjunction with the lecture, offering advanced undergraduates, PhD students and an interested academic public the opportunity for in-depth discussion with the guest speaker.

Speakers are therefore invited to stay for between one and four weeks. The invitation to deliver the Schlegel Lecture includes plans for the lecture to be published as an essay in a short volume.
